Love to use it

I used it in remodling our bath room. It will let you make cuts where you cant with a regular saw. ITmade it a lot easier on me on lots of places i had to use it. It has all ready payed for its self in the time it saved me.

Works great till 30 day warranty expires

Purchased tool and it worked great used it twice for quick sand jobs. The third use it stopped vibrating while motor runs and 30 day warranty had expired . Not repairable, no customer support. Bottom line Chicago tools are junk I then purchased a replacement Terratek TPMT319C Oscillating Multi-Function Power Tool, 9-Piece Kit. It cost only $18.99 works fine and comes with a two year limited warranty. I hope you know what you can do with your Chicago Tools.

Refurbished- Not worth the savings

The "Bonus storage bag and 15 accessories" is apparently imaginary, as all this came with was two (yes, two) instruction manuals, and one sheet of sandpaper for the sander. Somehow, sandpaper is supposed to make up for the lack of instructions for the sander, AND constitutes "Bonus storage bag and 15 accessories." Now I have to go out and spend the savings of buying refurbished just to test them. I'm unimpressed.

Wow, what a great value from Amazon. I built my entire deck with this drill on two charges. It has all the power I need around the house.I looked at several other makes at more than twice the price before I bought this unit. I'm very happy I went with this one. The chucking system works very well too.I have no complaints with this fine product from Black & Decker. Shipping was very fast too.

Awesome Drill

I don't own this drill, but I used my friend's to build a huge outdoor wooden playsets. It took three days to build, and did it all on one charge.One really great feature on this drill is the ability to increase or decrease the amount of torque. What I built was made out of cedar, which can split really easy especially the thin planks around the railings.I'll be picking one up.

Tough Torque

I just received the drill so haven't given it much of a workout yet. But I am impressed with the torque...it really makes even my dull bits look good. (I really plan to sharpen those bits....someday.) I have been using a 14V B&D for several years and I get nothing but slippage with the bit going nowhere. In fact I bought Skill AC drill for the rough stuff...which will now go in my RV and this 18V will take the place of all my other drills. I also like the ability to pick a useable torque for setting screws, an impossible task with any other tool I ever had.I really like having the two batteries included although I doubt I willl be doing enough drilled at one sitting to run out of battery power.Again in my life I asked myself; "Why didn't I do this sooner?"

Works as expected

I've used this adapter on both Bosch and Genesis blades, the screw holds tight and the collar gives a surface for the blade to sit on. As far as the bumps on the collar there are so many different blade configurations no universal collar can accommodate them all. I just use the smooth side to give me the most contact with the blade. I find it works best with the 1+" blades for straight cuts. The blade can shift if the screw isn't tightened down enough or you move too quickly as you cut. Just go slow use plunge cuts and it works just fine. I've used it with mortise cuts which is precise work. The adapter allows you to use non-P+C blades which are less expensive or to use other ones hanging around. You can use any blade with the right hole size to slip over the screw.

mixed feelings

This item does allow you to use other brand blades, but when using this item, you lose the "tooless blade change" feature. This basically works like the old versions that require you to remove an allen head screw and washer to change blades. It works... but it takes you back to old school ways.

Bad quality and design

The only thing good is the adapter fit on the bottom of the tool. The 10(not 12 or 4) very tiny bumps on adapter barely hold the blade and even worse is that they are on the wrong position of most blades(including PC blades). I try to put the washer to hold the universal blade and the very thin washer bend when I tighten the screw. There is no way to a good fit. I returned it and bought another adapter.

So far, so great!

I'm a contractor. I use cordless screwguns every day in my work. I have used Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt, Ryobi, and now Hitachi screwguns and drivers. I have had these Hitachi tools for just over a week, and have found that the manufacturer has incorporated the best features of all the above drivers. First of all, the battery slides into the handle horizontally as opposed to vertically. This eliminates the post on the top of the battery, which makes the grip more ergonomic. It also makes the battery connection more secure, as the plastic clips aren't holding the weight of the battery in. There's nothing more frustrating than breaking one or both of those clips and having to tape a battery in place to hold it. That's never going to happen with the new Hitachi system. And speaking of weight, these guns are much lighter than all my old cordless tools, partially due to the lithium ion battery. When carrying a tool all day, the weight becomes an issue, whether it's in your hand or on your belt. The batteries also have much more staying power, and charge faster than the old technology. I spend much less time switching out batteries than I used to. There is ample torque in both drivers, as well. I typically drive 3 inch screws all day, and so far, am changing batteries only once per day. The case is large enough (and compartmentalized) to allow me to carry drivers and drill bits inside, so they're always handy. The included flashlight is handy, and is quite bright and maneuverable with it's swivel head. The hooks on the drivers are a real plus. They're metal, not plastic, which allows me to trust them more when working in high places. They also are movable to either side, allowing convenient use for left or right handed folks. The impact driver is a real wrist saver, as torque is not an issue when driving lag bolts. Overall, I'm quite pleased with this purchase. As time goes on, if something changes with what I've written here, I'll update my review.I'm also quite pleased with my experience in dealing with Amazon. Their customer service is everything I would want, shipping is quick and comprehensive, and the prices I get from Amazon are usually the best around. I also appreciate Amazon's good communication...tracking is provided right from their website. I don't have to go to the shipper's website and enter the tracking number. I will continue to shop with Amazon whenever possible.

A must for any guy...

Even if you don't consider yourself a real DIY person, you will definitely appreciate a set like this. I was a believer in screwdrivers for years, thinking that forearm and wrist strength were to be esteemed above convenience and speed. Well, I have since been re-educated away from my (erroneous) assumption that powered drivers were for wussies. Granted you will still need a manual screwdriver for some minor things, but I have bought this set and have never looked back since, it's phenomenal!! (if you need more control, there is also the high/low setting on both machines). A cordless drill and driver is ideal, and this one has plenty of power for most, if not all of the average or even semi-pro users. A few points to note: 1. There is no battery indicator and these Li-ion batteries give you full juice until they are dry, so avoid surprises and check your voltage with a meter (and recharge if necessary) before you start a big job. The good thing with Li's is that you don't have to wait until they die before you charge them since they don't have "memory" like the old NiCad's that would shortchange you if you did that. 2. Don't even bother with an adapter chuck for the driver, it's not practical to drill with a driver, the drill is for drilling (without the clutch of course). This is one of the big advantages for me, you can drill pilots and drive screws without switching bits back and forth, can't see why I would want to install a chuck to put in a drill bit and then have to change it to drive a screw, then change it back to drill again. The driver will also go to impact if it senses more resistance (opposite to the torque clutch on the drill which slips on resistance to avoid overdriving), so if you are drilling a hard substance, the bit will slow down and impact while turning a very small angle, not exactly what you want for drilling, at that point you actually want more speed, not less, plus you can break a bit due to the impacting action. 3. Sometimes after using the slip clutch setting, the knob is difficult to set back to drill mode. If this happens try setting the clutch back to 1, holding the chuck while pressing the trigger (on forward speed) and allowing it to slip again, this usually "frees up" the mechanism. Don't know why that happens, but it should not put you off from buying such a great kit, it's a minor glitch to work around. 4. For a more serious user, this may not be the "be-all-and-end-all" kit, consider also having a high powered, high speed, corded hammer drill for certain uses, e.g. drilling concrete. You don't want to shorten the life of your cordless set by using it for more than it was designed to do. These beauties will last a lifetime if you use them properly, I hate to hear users buy a medium duty home user tool and then complain that it can't do industrial work.All things considered, for the price, if you regularly do things at home or have a small business, this set will work very nicely. With a ten year warranty, don't think twice if you can afford it.

Love this combo!

I needed a new drill as my old Black & Decker 18v was slowly disintegrating - it was the quick-change kind where you pull out the chuck to reveal the hex chuck inside. Great idea, not durable. With all the Li-Ion tools out there, it was time to ditch Ni-Cad once and for all - yeah!On a whim I picked up a DeWalt 12v drill/impact driver comboDEWALT DCK211S2 12-Volt Max Drill/Driver / Impact Driver Combo Kit, got it home, and built some deck furniture. While it worked, it just felt like a toy. The drill struggled in Mahogany, like it needed more oomph. The impact driver didn't have a clutch, and was ALWAYS impacting. Noisy as heck. I loved the weight and size, though, but it had to go.After spending WAY too much time staring at all the options, I found this Hitachi set, and I have to say, I'm a happy guy.Pros:+ Tool case, while not metal, is still nicer than a bag. Also, you can store the drills with the batteries attached *AND* bits still in place. Nice!+ Size, weight - I'm into proper Ergonomics, and these fit in my hands great. Weight is about a pound more than the compact DeWalt, but still well balanced. Being able to stand on the battery is also crucial, otherwise my bits are always landing on dirt, rocks, etc.+ The light isn't a wimpy LED light! Not that I plan on using it, and I like the IDEA of LED and all that, but they just aren't bright enough for outdoor work. Occasionally I use my LED headlight, but these tired eyes need Lumens!+ The impact driver has a proper clutch! This means it won't start getting noisy until the last few threads. And when it's impacting, it's not horribly noisy, and mercifully quick.+ Price!+ Amazon! I got it delivered at 9:30am on a Saturday just in time to use, shipped in a day as promised. Dang!Cons:- No place to put tool bits! WTH!? I'll live, but that's a bummer.- LED light on both drills is distracting and casts a shadow. Maybe as a ring it'd be OK, but 1 light, useless.- Green can get lost among your tools. DeWalt's yellow is nice there.- Wish you could turn off impact driving completely, but I've only seen that on a 14.4v Bosch, which is twice the price of this combo!

Faulty design on BL1830

There is an intelligent circuit board inside the pack that needs to be powered, and it draws its power from the very cells it is monitoring.The basic design flaw is that the circuit is wired to be powered by only one of the many cells in the pack. The board draws a constant although small current from that single cell. If the battery is not used for a few weeks then that cell will deep discharge causing a weak link in the bank of cells, the pack then fails in the charger.Makita has programmed the circuitry so that if you try to charge the battery 3 times in this state, it will permanently disable it. Normal behavior is to think "why is it not charging, let me try again". If more than 1 year old, it is out of warranty.Makita should step up, redesign the battery, and offer on their website to replace any batteries which have not been abused with the new design.I would not buy any more Makita tools powered by this battery.

Great batteries, but they have a short life due to a bug

I love these batteries and the tools they power. They deliver more energy than my other brand 18 volt tools. The Makita smart charger charges them in 20 minutes. Wow, great battery! I should be happy, right? Partly I am, but partly I'm not. I am concerned about the huge number of premature failures people are reporting here and in the single BL1830 battery reviews. There's a problem and Makita is ignoring it.I did a lot of research on the net about this. My conclusion: this battery has design flaw that shuts down these batteries prematurely. It won't happen to everyone, but if the battery sits discharged for a long time, it's very likely to happen.Background: Lithium batteries can burn or explode if abused. They need monitoring, for safety reasons. So like everyone, Makita put in a smart control board in the battery pack. The control board monitors charging voltage, current, battery temperature, number of charges, and remembers all that. Sounds good, right? But.. there is a design bug. The battery control board draws power only from the first cell of the 5 cells in the battery. If you leave it sitting for a while, the control board will discharge that first cell to zero, while the others remain charged. To the control board or possibly the charger, that looks like a shorted cell, which could overheat, and the control board remembers it. If you try to charge it 3 times with an apparently deep discharged cell, sudden death! The control board tells the charger that the battery is unsafe to charge, and prevents charging in the Makita charger -- permanently.The key evidence is the apparent dead cell is usually that first cell, the one that powers the control board. Very likely the battery is still usable. It can probably be recharged on third party chargers that ignore the control board -- but never again on a Makita charger. If you have a dead battery, you could try to charge it on an aftermarket charger. They cost about $50, a lot less than a new battery.If you read the reviews for the single BL1830 battery, you will see that a lot of customers, about 1/3, are angry about these premature failures. Makita has extended the warranty if the battery fails before 150 charges, admitting they know about the problem. It's not enough. We should not have to deal with premature failures caused by a known design defect. Who has time on the job, and who has money to throw away?I can think of many ways to fix this. For example, Makita could reprogram the battery control board or charger so it did not lock up a good battery, or the control board could draw power from all 5 cells so this is less likely to happen to a single cell, or use a separate coin cell for the control board, or ... well, as you can see there are many possible ways to address this. My point is that Makita's engineers need to pick a solution and fix this problem.As I said, I really do love these batteries and tools. But this serious problem has been identified, and it needs to be fixed. In my opinion, Makita should recall these batteries and fix this problem, and release a better battery design for new sales. If not, Makita's reputation will continue to suffer, and there could be a class action lawsuit too. Makita is infuriating customers and destroying its reputation.

Serious battery design flaw significantly devalues good makita tools

There appears to be a serious design flaw with these batteries that can be researched on the net. The result is you may only get 1 year of use from these batteries. I have about $1000 of the LXT tool line. These are good tools who's value IMHO is seriously diminished because of a battery design fault. I purchased these tools about 1.5 years ago with one battery. I purchased a second battery about 1 year ago. They were lightly used for weekend projects and I stored them indoors and charged. One battery died in February and the other died in July. So they each lasted about one year each. I'm shocked! I purchased the Makita cordless line because I still have a 21 year old 12v Makita cordless drill that works like the day I got it. Two years ago I took apart our 12x20ft deck, refinished it and reassembled it with the 12v drill. I managed to reassemble about 95% of the deck on one battery charge!! amazing! I still have it and it still works great with the original batteries that are almost 22 years old now. So, I decided to go with Makita LXT line when I wanted to upgrade to more cordless tools. However, I use and store the new tools the same as the old tool and the new batteries both died in about 1 year. Many others are reporting this problem. The LXT line are good tools with lots of variety but I'd SERIOUSLY think before investing in these tools due to the defective batteries. They failed when I really needed them and am basically stuck spending serious money as they fail to keep using the tools I have. Makita - you really screwed up.
