well built, uncomplicated design

This is an incredible value if you are looking for a simple, all steel tool box that is still made in the USA. The picture can be misleading, as this tool box's interior is completely undivided. (What appears to be a divider is actually a hammer head.)The tool box's handle is metal, though it is hollow. Despite being hollow, the handle seems strong enough. In fact, the handle alone might be reason enough to buy this tool box. Nearly every other small tool box available has resorted to using plastic handles which are much more likely to slip out when carrying a heavy load of tools. Unfortunately, that's also exactly when you can least afford to have the handle slip out. This handle is all metal, and is attached to the lid with strong welds. As noted, the hinge is a full length, piano type.The latch is a simple type latch which can be accidentally caught open on a pants leg, causing you to drop all of your tools. A double compound latch has a retaining loop, so even if the latch is accidentally opened, the lid will only open a quarter of an inch or so, giving you a chance to properly latch your tool box again. If you would prefer the double compound latch (and that would be an excellent idea), you should consider getting the 16" model from the same manufacturer. It seems like a small difference in size and price, but you get a far, far better latch. At the very least, the simple latch on this tool box is hinged on the bottom side, so this is really only a concern if you wear cargo pants or have a hammer loop on your leg. (Were the latch hinged on the top, it could get caught on even your pants leg.)Still, if you need a small tool box, and have size or weight constraints to work around, I think you'd be very pleased with this tool box.

Latch is not secure

The latch sometimes opens unexpectedly, spilling the box's contents, just by lifting the box suddenly when it is full or heavy. It has a smooth catch that does not positively hold the moving portion of the latch. The latch stays closed only by the pressure of it's spring which is easily overcome by the weight of a full box. The catch is very smooth and rounded which helps the latch come open unintentionally. Look for other tool boxes with a wire latch that closes over a hook shaped catch and snaps closed with leverage. When you see one the difference will be obvious.

I recently bought this Stack-On 15 in tool box, and it's decent. It's just as it's described. It's just your basic, metal tool box (without any drawers or compartments) and it works just fine.
